About Cool Spot

Cool Spot is a mascot for 7 Up, introduced in 1987. During this time, the red spot in the 7 Up logo was anthropomorphized: given arms, legs, a mouth, and sunglasses. British video games developer Virgin Interactive's American studio produced a platform game starring the 7 Up Spot, entitled Cool Spot.

The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Master System version ($7).

Also released on: Super Nintendo Entertainment System · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · DOS · Amiga · Super Famicom · Sega Master System/Mark III. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A solid licensed-mascot platformer from Virgin, cheap in Europe and a safe pick.

Cool Spot is a platform game from Virgin Games, published for the Master System in Europe in October 1993. Its hero is Spot, the mascot of the 7 Up soft drink, who got his own game at a time when brand mascots such as Chester Cheetah and the Noid were also starring in theirs. The game also appeared on the Mega Drive, Super NES, Game Gear and Game Boy, among others, so this page covers the Master System cart.

Matt Furniss is credited with the Master System music.

Before you buy

Only a European cart exists. Loose, it is cheap, below the middle of the European-only carts, and the look-alike risk is low. Check the manual if you are buying complete.

The Sega Genesis version

A bright, polished licensed platformer that sits a little below the middle among US carts and costs less still in Europe.

This is the Genesis cartridge of Cool Spot, a platformer from Virgin Games starring Spot, the mascot of the 7 Up soft drink. It came out in North America in April 1993, in Europe in June 1993 and in Japan in February 1994. The same game also appeared on the Super NES, Master System, Game Gear and other formats, so this page is for the Genesis cartridge only.

Video Games & Computer Entertainment, reviewing the Super NES version in September 1993, called the Genesis graphics outstanding, and in 1996 GamesMaster ranked the Genesis version 92nd on its list of the top 100 games of all time.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 36September 199493%

“Although Cool Spot doesn't pack the all-around, in-depth, complex game play found in Sonic The Hedgehog or Super Mario, it's got enough going for it to guarantee the little guys a decent following in the video game world.”

— GamePro, April 1993

“Cool Spot is a winner with quality and class from beginning to end.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, May 1993

“It looks great, sounds even better and is easy to pick up and learn to play, yet it is challenging enough to keep you from being initially bored.”

— Video Games & Computer Entertainment, June 1993

“Original, fun and super cool, this will have you tearing your hair out. It's very difficult and if you want to hone your timing and patience, then this is the game to do it with.”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits a little below the middle, so it is an easy cart to find at a fair price. The European cart usually costs less than the US one, while the Japanese cart usually costs far more and has a different cartridge shape. Because the risk tier is Medium, ask for a photo of the board and compare it with the board listed on this page. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
